Ένταση επικράτησε στη συνέντευξη Τύπου της Εθνικής Ολλανδίας, με τον Βέρτζιλ Φαν Ντάικ να δέχεται επίμονες ερωτήσεις σχετικά με τη διάθεσή του και τη συμπεριφορά του απέναντι στους δημοσιογράφους.
Ένας ρεπόρτερ σχολίασε πως ο αρχηγός των «Οράνιε» έδειχνε λιγότερο φιλικός και ανοιχτός από άλλες φορές, επισημαίνοντας παράλληλα τις σύντομες απαντήσεις του.
Ο Φαν Ντάικ αρχικά προσπάθησε να επαναφέρει τη συζήτηση στο αγωνιστικό σκέλος, όμως όταν ρωτήθηκε αν έχει πρόβλημα με τους δημοσιογράφους.
«Φαίνεσαι σαν να μη θέλεις να είσαι εδώ… Δεν είσαι τόσο φιλικός και ανοιχτός όσο άλλες φορές και απαντάς μονολεκτικά» του είπε, με τον ποδοσφαιριστή ν’ απαντά αρχικά: «Δεν γίνεται τώρα κουβέντα μεταξύ μας, είναι συνέντευξη Τύπου. Πες μου τι θέλεις να ρωτήσεις».
«Θέλω να ρωτήσω αν έχεις κάποιο πρόβλημα με του δημοσιογράφους» είπε ο ρεπόρτερ, με τον VvD να του λέει: «Δεν έχω κανένα πρόβλημα με τους περισσότερους, αλλά όταν γράφονται και λέγονται ανοησίες, τι να κάνω;».
«Θα μπορούσες να βγεις μπροστά και να μιλήσεις ανοιχτά προς το άτομο που θεωρείς ότι το κάνει αυτό» τόνισε ο δημοσιογράφος, με τον ποδοσφαιριστή να συνεχίζει: «Θεωρώ ότι απευθύνομαι σε έναν τέτοιο, έτσι δεν είναι;».

The journalist: “It seems like your presence here is something obligatory and burdensome for you, isn’t it? With your friends in the media.”
🗣️ Van Dijk: “What do you mean by that?”
The journalist: “I mean you’re not as talkative as usual today and you seem a bit rude and sullen, whereas normally you’re a kind and friendly person, right?”
🗣️ Van Dijk: “Yes, but sometimes things need to be said as they are. A person can’t just listen to nonsense all the time.”
The journalist: “But you can be straightforward and open.”
🗣️ Van Dijk: “I am very open and straightforward.”
The journalist: “Yes, but your answers are very short and you end the conversation quickly.”
🗣️ Van Dijk: “Well, I see myself as extremely open.”
The journalist: “Yes? Well, tell us then what you want.”
🗣️ Van Dijk (interrupting): “But this isn’t a chat or a conversation between us! There’s supposed to be a question you’re asking. So what’s the question you want to ask?”
The journalist: “I just see that you’re not like your usual self in press conferences and you’re responding in a dry tone. Does your relationship with the media still bother and worry you?”
🗣️ Van Dijk: “I have no problem with most of the media and I’ve never had a problem. But when nonsense and lies are published, what can I do about that?”
The journalist: “Well then, you could speak up and confront the person who published that nonsense directly, right?”
🗣️ Van Dijk (in a sharp tone, right in his face): “Well, aren’t I talking to that person right now?!”
The journalist: “Yes, but you don’t have to treat everyone this way.”
🎙️ The media official: “Guys, considering the press conference time, let’s move on to questions.”
The journalist (changing the subject): “Alright. Regarding tomorrow’s match, what’s your role on the field? And will it be different from your previous role in Ronald Koeman’s system?”
🗣️ Van Dijk: “Most likely, I’ll be doing the same role I’m currently doing with Liverpool.”
The journalist: “And that suits you well?”
🗣️ Van Dijk: “Yes.”
The journalist: “Because some people said we’re excited to see how Van Dijk will handle the new system, where you have to play in a very advanced and high defensive line on the field.”
🗣️ Van Dijk: “If you’ve been following me every week, I play in an extremely advanced line in every match with Liverpool, so I really don’t know who’s spreading that kind of talk!”
The journalist: “So you feel comfortable in the new system you’ll be playing with?”
